In Maastricht, Netherlands, emissaries from 12 European nations sign the Treaty on European Union:
- establishing shared citizenship;
- greater collaboration on foreign policy;
- an eventual common military;
- pledging to merge their fiat (Latin for “let it become”) currencies into the trans-national Euro; and
- creating the European System of Central Banks.
