Shushkevich, of the former Soviet Socialist Republic of Belarus; and President Boris Yeltsin, of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, sign the Belavezha Accords, dissolving the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States.
