The Cuban Revolution begins: Fidel Castro, commanding a band of 160 communist revolutionaries, leads a failed attack against the Moncada Barracks, in the city of Santiago de Cuba.

       The Federal enclave of Arizona State Police and National Guard (United states Soldiers) raid the Fundamentalist (polygamist) Jesus Christ Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) settlement at Short Creek, arresting approximately 400 fundamentalist Mormons, including 236 children.

       Postscript: More than half of the children were not reunited with their parents for over two years.  Nearly 50 children were never returned to their parents.
