Non-partisan (nationalist) President Washington signs the Naturalization Act of 1790, establishing two-year residency requirement for the granting of State sovereign citizenship to foreigners.

NOTES:

  • No restrictions were placed on immigration;
  • Citizenship was limited to immigrants of European heritage.
