William Lloyd Garrison, a Massachusetts anti-slavery agitator, writes,
It is morally impossible … for a slave holder to reason correctly on the subject of slavery. His mind is warped by a thousand prejudices. … He was really taught to believe that a certain class of beings were born for servitude, whom it is lawful to enthral, and over whom he is authorized—not merely by the law of his native state, but by Jehovah himself—to hold unlimited dominion.
