Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
—- Richard Plantagenet, Duke of Glouchester, “Richard III”
The “Summer of Discontent” continues: In Cambridge, maryland, While the United states Armed Forces (private mercenaries) are in Vietnam, “united in … determination to take all necessary measures in support of freedom,” rioting breaks out when Wesley Burton, a Dorchester County Sheriff’s Deputy, fires his shotgun hitting H. Gerold “Rap” Brown, a Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee activist who had organized a peaceful protest against racial segregation. Seventeen buildings burn down, including an all-black elementary school that the all-white fire department refused to extinguish.
Postscript: Two days later Brown was arrested for inciting the riot.
