Emissaries from Belgium, the Republic of France, the free-market Federal Republic of (West) Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands sign the 1957 Treaties of Rome transforming the European Coal and Steel Community into the European Economic Community (a.k.a. “Common Market”) and creating the European Atomic Energy Community (a.k.a. “Euratom”).
