Israel extends diplomatic recognition to the renegade Somali enclave of Somaliland. Although Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991, no other nation has recognized it nor has the 55-member African Union.
NOTE: Maged Abdelfattah Abdelaziz, Egypt’s Ambassador to the United Nations, expressed his concerns that “any measures arising from this illegitimate recognition [will be] aimed at facilitating forced displacement of the Palestinian people.”
