The Cold War continues/the second Red Scare begins: Commander-in-Chief Truman issues Executive Order 9835, creating “the most sweeping inquiry into employee  loyalty in the nation’s history.”  This covers a work force of over two million Federal employees (French for “government workers”).

NOTE: If CONgress were to confine the functions of the Federal government to those authorized by the Constitution for the united States, the number of Federal employees would be so low that loyalty could be dealt with on an individual basis.

       [updated 5/16/2025]

In 2001, the number of federal employees is given as 2,704,015, with a payroll of $105,296,160,000, WA&BoF2003, p. 144. It must be higher in 2003, and beyond.  —— JL
