The New York (City) Herald editorializes in favor of the continued status quo on slavery: “The immense increase in the numbers [of slaves] within so short a time speaks for the good treatment and happy contended lot of the slaves.  They are comfortably fed, housed and clothed, and seldom or never overworked.”

       Questions:

  • Why were slaves continually trying to escape?
  • Why was there a fugitive slave law?
  • Why was there an “underground railroad” sending self-emancipated slaves to Canada?
