FALSE FLAG OPERATION (1846)—the Mexican-American War begins: Brigadier General Anastasio Torrejon, commanding the Third Calvary Regiment of the Army of Mexico, captures a Union Army of Occupation reconnoitering party of 49 mounted cavalry, commanded by Captain Seth Thornton. Eleven Americans lose their lives.
