The Rhode Island Civil War begins: Suffragist (constitutionalist) “Governor” Thomas W. Dorr leads 200 suffragists in launching an unsuccessful attack against the State Militia arsenal in Providence, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, in attempt to overthrow the State government and implement the People’s Constitution.
