Republican (constitutionalist) President Madison signs the Dallas (protective) Tariff Act. This is the first tariff intended not to just produce revenue but also to force consumers to purchase more expensive domestically manufactured goods..
NOTE: The protective tariff was part of Republican Henry Clay’s, Speaker of the House, three-pronged “American System,” The other elements being:
- A national bank to foster commerce; and
- Federal subsidies for roads, canals, and other “internal improvements” to develop profitable markets for agriculture.
