The Battle of Hastings: William the Conqueror, commanding a mercenary army recruited from across all of Europe, defeats the knights of Godwinson, commanded by Harold II (r. 1066).  Harold is killed in the fighting, and is the last Anglo-Saxon king of England; William I (r. 1066 – 1087) becomes the first Norman king of England.
